For some strange reason when a restaurant or club brings in a three star chef from Europe the food always disappoint. And so did several generations of resident European chefs at the Derby Room.
So finally they relocated the western chef, who is a Hong Kong Chinese guy, to be the chef at the Derby Room. From the stewards’ dining room. His cooking is excellent. I think more so after observing all the visiting three star chefs too.
Ingredients are tops. Poulet de Bresse, Dover Sole, American beef and lately, Korean Han Wo beef too.
Lunch is a great deal. A three course meal for about HKD $320. Excellent food and a classy interior, best service.
Derby Room is the western dining room of the Jockey Club and is not open to non members. So you need an invitation from a member.
Best and cosy environment. All staff are polite and friendly. Good food and drinks.

Located at the 1/F of the Jockey club, Derby restaurant and bar provides a sophisticated, delicious dining experience.
Appetizer was delicious, especially the crab couscous roll, it was refreshing and light. As for main course, the lobster spaghetti is their signature. It came with five pieces of lobster meat, and the spaghetti had a generous amount of their flavorful sauce. The strawberry medley had a chilled “soup” with a small sponge cake and sorbet on top. Perfect summer dessert.
Although, it was a little slow, the service and overall experience was great. I recommend the seaweed butter.

Starred Chef Francky Semblat has transformed the level of cuisine at this renowned establishment – together with an experienced hospitality team will guarantee a memorable experience. With many ingredients sourced directly from France, the quality can be assured. Line caught Dover Sole, Yellow Chicken, Wagyu beef Burgundy cheeses will not disappoint. Multiple wine glasses allow several wines to be sipped and enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

With fine dining, I genuinely appreciate the artistry that goes into the preparation of each and every plate that comes before the customer.
I loved the
🧅unique punchy flavour of the onion cream tart (pic 2);
🎃the surprising hint of ginger in that blob of soft white mashmallow sitting in a creamy pool of pumpkin soup (pic 3);
🥑the refreshing kick of the avocado mousse resting on a bed of chopped beetroot with turmeric (pic 4&5);
🌰the velvety chestnut soup that warmed my heart (pic 6);
🦞the incredible burst of flavours in that silky langoustine custard with a huge chunk of langoustine topped with creamy sea urchin (pic 7);
🐣/🥩 the delicately prepared main courses of pigeon and wagyu (pic 8&1)
🍨a beautifully plated fresh fig dessert (pic 9); and
🍫the trio of petite four being an adorable matcha treat, a mini lemon curd tart and orangettes😍 (pic 10)
With multi-courses meals, every dish is just so beautifully plated and perfectly executed that the main course just doesn’t stand out as much, and while it still tastes absolutely delicious, it usually isn’t my favourite course of the evening. Do you tend to feel the same?
Lunch in Derby, the environment was very nice and the table setting were good. Food was excellent and prize was reasonable. We ordered a three course set and was full. All were tasteful and delicious. The ginger sofole was wonderful giving an amazing ending to our lunch.
