Food is always associated with memory. This is the way my parents start their day, a little luxury but a practical luxury as they also loaded up their stomach for a hard days work. 95% dim sum you have in Hong Kong is now made from factory, this is a rare chance you could taste hows hand made dim sum like. Only other places are a few hotel restaurants (some actually also use factory made stuff) or Luk Yu in Central. The place is not the cleanest and the dim sum is also an acquired taste, but give it a try, better get someone know the place and the ritual.
30 over years ago, 3 guys got together and decided to start a dim sum restaurant. When the business was about to begin, one of the original partners backed out and worked as a staff instead. That’s why the name of the shop in Chinese means “3 Minus 1”.
Most big Chinese restaurants these days have their the dim sum made in a factory in China, and have it delivered by truck to their kitchen on a daily basis.
“Saam Hui Yaat” food is by no means fine food. But it is still made by hand and cooked on location. That alone is worth the visit.
We sat on old rickety stools and our table was lopsided. The cups and teapot are all chipped. Everything in the restaurant is old, the staff and patrons included!
We tried the Char Siew Bao. There was a lot of bread, but the Char Siew was good. The Beef Balls and Siew Mai were rather big and delicious. The Cheong Fun was freshly made and decent. 5 dishes of dim sum and tea for 2 came up to $92.
Definitely worthed the visit! Try it out before the owners retire and close for good.
SSS grade
Least stressful place to eat! A small dim sum eatery but it represents the best Hong Kong can offer… Fantastic food, low price, English menu and most importantly, very friendly staff… The man serving us even helped us with the washing of the utensils and pouring of the tea! What a place… Best kept secret of HK!
Local dim sum restaurant, kind staff and good food. forget about loud places, here the space is little and people are quiet. Cheap prices for a great yum cha.
Cheap but average
Saving grace is that the 排骨 is really old school, with cheap decent tea.
Nostalgic interiors, worth a look before it’s gone.
Just moved to Sai Ying Pun, literally 1 block away from this amazing old school HK dim sum place – don’t hate. And don’t let the unassuming interior / exterior fool you – this is a secret gem beloved by the locals for offering some of the tastiest old school dim sum you’ll ever have in HK. So good, even apparently CNN and no less a personage than Anthony Bourdain [RIP] loved it.
Hours are from 5am to about 2pm, but the earlier the better since quantities of Har Gaow and Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls especially go fast. In addition to dim sum standards, they also offer a great variety of old school HK noodle, soup noodle and rice dishes, veggies. Everything I’ve eaten there so far had been fantastic.
Service is cordial but can be a bit gruff and certainly not Michelin white glove – what do you expect for a true old school throwback joint? Pricing is ludicrously cheap for expats on a decent wage in 2018. English menus are available but of course good old Canto is the way to go if you can.
Customers range from cabbies, construction guys, gamblers, club kids going home, tai tais, students, to suit wearing expat guys and gals like me – it’s a regular mosh pit of folks from all walks of life and it’s just the way I like it and the way things oughta be. Everyone’s there for the food, not to pose or vogue.
This place is one of the reasons why I chose to live in SYP. It keeps alive the tradition and flavors and vibes of old school HK joints while around the area you now got decent Western fare from all over the world, just a couple blocks away on High Street and the vicinity.
Support this place – they totally deserve it.
In the process you’ll end up sampling some of the finest, no muss-no fuss old school HK dim sum you’ve ever had. The guys running the joint are a disappearing breed in HK. Go sample their wares as much as possible while you still can.
A MUST VISIT for those who love HK dim sum around the Sai Ying Pun / Kennedy Town / Sheung Wan area. Period. Full stop.
Great value, guy speaks a little Mandarin, confirmed my order in case there was miscomm between us. English menu available
The last few dim sum tea house in HK with local hand made dim sum, which is not by machine nor from China. Some rumors say it will be closed soon after the chef retired. Go while it still exist.
Dim sum is not good taste with small portion. Price is a little bit high compare with other Chinese restaurant.
Traditional and local handmade dim sum. It is delicious 😋. The price is also reasonable.
But it is not that comfortable to eat in here. …
a very local and old style hand made dim sum.
